When it comes to hurricanes and tropical storms, Floridians have learned first hand it pays to be prepared. To help you be better prepared, we have posted information on this site designed to help you lessen the impact of a major storm or hurricane. Hurricanes can cause severe damage. Before a hurricane hits, you should take steps to protect your property and lessen damages from hurricanes. The Department of Financial Services has a Natural Disaster guide (in English and Spanish) to help you prepare for disasters. It also has useful information on handling claims and obtaining help. Flooding is a major cause of damage after a storm and insured's can file a flood claim under the National Flood Insurance Program.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management tracks storms and provides information on the status of Florida shelters and evacuation routes.
