Dear Friends in
Florida's Fire
and Emergency Services:
Over the last
few years a number of changes have come about with the Bureau of Fire Standards
and Training. Some have
been due to the changes in the mission of the fire service caused by the
terrorism threat to America, others have been due to the
hurricanes and others to technological improvements now available.
If you have not
visited our campus you should. Training props for structural firefighting,
vehicles, flammable gases, liquids, and more are present including
state-of-the-art computer controlled propane fueled “burn building” props. A
three story structural collapse prop simulates a partially collapsed building
with all types of construction portrayed to teach breaching, cutting and search
and rescue. Rubble piles simulate catastrophic collapses, confined space props
and an above grade trench prop are all used for the technical rescue and urban
search and rescue training. There
are railroad tank cards and over the road transports for hazardous materials
training, and there are more improvements to come.
We now have
articulation agreements with most colleges in Florida
to accept our courses towards their degrees, and for us to accept their courses
towards Florida
certifications.
Florida Statue 633.801, the Florida Firefighter Occupational Safety and
Health Act was passed by the Florida Legislature a few years back, placing
firefighter safety as part of this Bureau. Considerable information can be found
at our safety page
(http://www.myfloridacfo.com/sfm/bfst/SafetyHealth/FireSafetyandHealth.htm) and the
actual statutes and rules can be found at the
Division’s website
(http://www.myfloridacfo.com/sfm) .
Our registration
and records management website,
www.floridastatefirecollege.org is part of the FCDICE system, allowing you
to check your records, track continuing education, register for classes at the
Florida State Fire College and other participating providers, apply for
certification renewals, apply for certification tests, get your test results,
and much more.
Thanks for
stopping by our website. If you want updated information from the Bureau sent
directly to your e-mail, sign up for our
'a-list' and we
will send you the material currently faxed to fire departments all over the
state about legislation, training opportunities, meetings, state job postings
and more.
I look forward
to meeting you at the numerous meetings, classes and events around our state.
Sincerely,
Dave Casey
Bureau Chief
