of Education Statewide Course Numbering
System uses the FFP prefix to indicate
thoses courses within the Fire Science
Curriculum. The first number indicates
the level, either Freshman (1) or Sophomore
(2), and the last three numbers indicate
the course topic. Due to the variety
of courses offered through out the state
it should be noted that courses with
the same last three numbers are the
same course, contain the same course
content and contact hours regardless
of the first leveling number.

responsible for providing fire and life
safety education. The curriculum provides
the student with many innovative methods
on how to make public education programs
a fun and memorable experience for all
audiences. The student will learn how
to apply make-up, create costumes and
develop skits and programs. If you are
looking for a creative and fun way to
develop and teach fire and life safety
this is it. Students must have a personal
make-up kit. (Formerly the Public Education
through Clowning class)

EDUCATION THROUGH ADVANCED CHARACTERIZATION

This course is a continuation of
Public Education through Basic Characterization.
The student will learn advanced techniques
of character development, improvisation
and presentation skills. Also included
are advanced make-up techniques (the
five-minute face), advanced balloons,
making professional props and puppets.
You will learn new communication techniques,
including basic sign language for those
audiences with special needs. The highlight
of this course is a field trip to the
pediatric and geriatric wards at Shands
Hospital, where you can see your "character"
in "action". A prerequisite of this
course is the Public Education through
Basic Characterization class. (Formerly
the Advanced Clowning class.)

FIRE
& LIFE SAFETY EDUCATOR I

Textbook: IFSTA Fire and Life Safety
Education
Course Fee: $60.00 payable to Florida
Department of Financial Services
This course is designed to provide
the public educator with the knowledge
and skills needed to successfully perform
as a fire and life safety educator as
addressed in NFPA 1035. For those who
practice the multidiscipline profession
of fire and life safety educator (including
uniformed fire service personnel and
other professionals), topics include
fire behavior, community assessment,
injury prevention and juvenile firesetting.
The student will also develop presentation
skills and learn how to formulate public
education programs. This course meets
the national certification criteria
for Fire and Life Safety Education,
Level I.
NOTE: This
course is an approved elective for Fire
Inspector II and Fire Officer II.

are measured. Topics also include budget
preparation and resource management.
Prerequisite: Fire & Life Safety
Educator I, FFP 1793.
NOTE: This
course is part of the Fire & Life Safety
Educator Certification.

spokesperson, according to current practices
in the profession of public relations

service. Particular emphasis will be
placed on case studies in crisis communications
and the role of the Public Information
Officer's role in the Incident Command
System.

Textbook: Practical Method of Forensic
Photography
Course Fee: $85.00 payable to Florida
Department of Financial Services (The
registration fee includes
a lab fee)
An introductory course in photography,
it will cover camera parts and operation,
properties of film, photographic composition
and lighting. Particular emphasis will
be placed on using photography to properly
document a fire/crime scene. In addition,
students will be exposed to other uses
for photography including training,
public education, and public information.
Students must provide their own 35mm
camera with adjustable lens. Film and
processing are provided.
