Hazardous Materials Courses and Fees

Hazardous Materials Series:

Note:   The Department of Education Statewide Course Numbering System uses the FFP prefix to indicate thoses courses within the Fire Science Curriculum. The first number indicates the level, either Freshman (1) or Sophomore (2), and the last three numbers indicate the course topic. Due to the variety of courses offered through out the state it should be noted that courses with the same last three numbers are the same course, contain the same course content and contact hours regardless of the first leveling number.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS TECHNICIAN:

FSFC 508 (160 contact hours, 0 college credits, class size: minimum 15, maximum 30)

Textbook: IAFF Training for Hazardous Materials Response Technician

Course Fee: $300.00 payable to Florida Department of Financial Services (The registration fee includes a lab fee)

This is the 160-hour hands-on practices HazMat course in which students will fulfill the functions of HazMat technicians in a variety of full-scale field scenarios. These scenarios include making entries into hazardous materials scenes and determination of type of incident by observation, monitoring, and research. Students will set up full-size incident command and decontamination facilities and respond to simulated container and vehicle emergencies.

NOTE: Prerequisite: HazMat Operations Level

AIR MONITORING

FSFC 510 (24 contact hours, 0 college credits, class size: 10 minimum, 20 maximum)

Textbook: Hazardous Gas Monitors

Course Fee: $96.00, payable to Florida Department of Financial Services

This training course is designed to teach the student how to select and use the different types of monitoring devices that may be used in the field. At completion the student will be able to demonstrate the proper use of different monitoring equipment and how to interpret the results.

NOTE: Prerequisite: HazMat Technician

CHLORINE EMERGENCIES

FSFC 515 (24 Hours, 0 college credits, class size: 15 minimum, 20 maximum)

Textbook: Included

Course Fee: $96.00 payable to Florida Department of Financial Services (The registration fee includes a lab fee)

This course covers the uses of chlorine, manufacturing of chlorine, properties of chlorine, health effects and first aid procedures, contingency planning, container construction, personal protective equipment, site management, and use of chlorine kits, followed by hands on scenarios.
