MIAMI–In memory of the heroes who fought for America's freedoms, dreams and ideals, 16 Florida children, who have suffered the loss of a parent during Operation Iraqi Freedom, were presented Florida Prepaid College Foundation scholarships today during a ceremony at the United States Southern Command headquarters in Miami.

Each child received a Florida Prepaid four-year university tuition plan, four-year university local fee plan and one-year dormitory plan. Joining Florida Prepaid College Foundation Chairman Stanley G. Tate in honoring Florida's fallen soldiers, their families and their children were Governor Jeb Bush, United States Army General James T. Hill, Florida Chief Financial Officer Tom Gallagher, The Adjutant General of Florida Douglas Burnett, and United States Navy Rear Admiral Thomas R. Morris.

"Rebuilding lives after losing a loved one takes courage and support from others," said Gallagher. "These scholarships will help offset the cost of higher education for the children and spouses of Florida servicemen who died fighting for our country."

"Education is a guiding light, providing our children the opportunity to reach their dreams," said Stanley G. Tate, Chairman of the Florida Prepaid College Foundation. "No one can take that away from our country or from these children who are here today."

The Florida Prepaid College Foundation has presented more than 18,000 scholarships since its inception in 1990. This is the first time the Foundation has provided scholarships to the children of fallen military heroes.

"These brave men are heroes to their country, their families and to all of us," said General James Hill. "They have been taken from us, but through the support of the military, their families and the Florida Prepaid College Foundation, these men and their dedication to our freedoms will never be forgotten."

When the children are ready for college, their scholarship will cover the actual cost at any of Florida's 11 public universities or 28 community colleges, or the value of their scholarship may be transferred to most private colleges in Florida, select technical schools and most out-of-state colleges.

The Florida Prepaid College Foundation is the charitable direct support organization for the Florida Prepaid College Board, which manages the Florida Prepaid College Plan and the new Florida College Investment Plan.
