SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. – Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater’s Department of Financial Services will host an Operation S.A.F.E. workshop tomorrow, Wednesday, July 15th, at 10am EST at the Savannah Regional Recreation Center located at The Villages. Operation S.A.F.E (or, Stop Adult Financial Exploitation) workshops educate seniors and their families on how to inform, empower and protect themselves from financial scams and fraud. More than 700 residents and family members have registered to attend this free event.

Florida’s seniors are inundated with investment offers and requests for charitable donations and are thus constantly exposed to targeted financial scams. These workshops prepare seniors and their families by providing information necessary in making smart insurance and financial transactions.

These workshops encourage seniors to ‘Be Scam Smart’ by learning about:

• The Psychology of a Scam
• How to Spot Fraudulent Behavior
• Common Scams that Target Seniors
• How to Fight Identity Theft

Seniors who have attended workshops in the following cities had these things to say about their experience:

“Savored every moment of this workshop. The information was needed and vital for seniors’ and consumers’ financial survival.” - West Palm Beach

“Presentations were great & well timed. Excellent information we all need to know.” - Pensacola
“Every senior in the city and state should attend the Be Scam Smart Workshop.” - Jacksonville

“Thank you for alerting us to the scam we as seniors are exposed to.” - Brandon
